Minister for Youth

St. John’s Baptist Church is located in the historic Elizabeth neighborhood of Charlotte and is a progressive, service oriented congregation committed to the principles of inclusion and openness to all who seek to be followers of Christ.  We are affiliated with the Alliance of Baptists, the Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists, the Baptist Peace Fellowship of North America, the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, and the NC Council of Churches.  We are seeking a part-time ministerial staff member to lead our established youth program.  We welcome all candidates called to lead youth in a progressive and inclusive setting to apply regardless of denominational affiliation. Position Description:

Title: Minister for Youth
Status: Part time
Reports To: Senior Minister
Work Schedule: Avg. 20 hours per week

Position Summary: The Minister for Youth works in partnership with the Senior Minister, staff, and congregational leadership to strengthen congregational health and vitality. This role equips followers of Christ for active, transformational servant-faith ministries within the church and the wider world, with a particular focus on building a community of faith that nurtures the spiritual formation of youth.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Youth Ministries

  • Provides leadership and guides St. John’s in responsibility for youth. Ministry practice includes Family Support; Friendship; Spiritual Formation; Community Engagement; Teaching and Equipping Leaders for Youth Ministries.

  • Plans, coordinates, implements and evaluates a comprehensive ministry with youth, in grades 6 through 12, and their families

  • Assures the enlistment, coordination, training and supervision of youth leadership

  • Serves alongside congregational ministry leaders (with a particular focus on youth) to ensure they receive appropriate resources, development, support and training necessary for them to foster and nurture their volunteers and fulfill their ministry roles connecting with the priorities and goals of St. John’s

General

  • Serves as a colleague with other staff pursuing the commitments of the staff team covenant and professional development goals
  • Works to cooperatively implement the goals of the church and to participate in the total ministry of the church
 

Community Impact (Outreach, Assimilation, Engagement)

Outreach to Youth Guests

  • Engages in community activities supporting outreach and messaging to youth
  • Creates and coordinates external community connections to assure St. John’s impact in the metro Charlotte area
  • In relationship with the Senior Minister and staff, expands and coordinates creative uses of digital media, technology and communications to connect the message of St. John’s with the Charlotte area.
  • Works cooperatively to implement the outreach efforts and goals of the church
 

Assimilation

  • Extends our hospitality/outreach to youth in the Charlotte area by connecting them with and welcoming them into St. John’s
 

Engagement

  • Networks within the community, other congregations and affiliated groups to develop service partnerships that are meaningful to youth
 

Congregational Care

  • Shares youth related prayer concerns and celebrations with the congregation

  • Openly initiates communication with the ministry staff related to congregational care or pastoral care needs based on interaction with and ministry to youth

Spiritual Growth

  • Develop a spiritual formation growth plan for Youth

  • Oversees the Sunday Ministry Programming for Youth

  • Engages teachers from the congregation and other resources as needed to ensure effective Youth Programming as Needed

  • Assists in worship development and planning as needed

  • Participates in worship leadership as requested

Church Operations

  • Serves on Youth Resource Team

  • Oversees all volunteers involved in youth ministries
